Genetics
Genetic selection is one area where we have put a tremendous amount of focus.  We believe that by matching genetics to our environment we can not only improve our profitability but also eliminate the need for growth hormones, protect the environment and provide a premium product to our customers.

We rely extensively on performance data and EPD to determine the bulls we use in our cowherd.  We have recently initiated an Artificial Insemination program that allows us to access proven, premium genetics at an affordable price.

Our primary goals for our sires are to maintain cow size and fleshing ability, improve fertility, optimize growth rate, and target high value markets.  We are putting a balanced emphasis on carcass characteristics in our cowherd.  We believe 100% customer satisfaction with beef will generate true wealth for those involved in the chain.  Our cowherd exhibits a lot of Angus Traveler genetics as we have found that these cattle consistently perform in our environment.

Sires

We have put a lot of emphasis over the years on buying the very best bulls we can afford (sometimes more than we can afford), but it has definitely paid off in terms of where our cowherd is at today.  In 2004, we initiated an AI program in order to access the very best proven genetics in the industry.  We have pursued this goal with the help of Genex CRI.  We have also been using a succession of Angus herdsires with similar EPD profiles and phenotype as our AI sires.

Walking Sires
Johnston King 923W
This young angus bull was purchased from Johnston/Fertile Valley at their Spring 2010 sale and will be used in our own replacement female generating program.  A well built, well balanced bull with good feet and structure that traces back to Bando on the dam's side and the King bull on the topside.  BALANCE and QUALITY are the two words I would use to describe this bull.

Minburn Yellowstone 57S
This is a soggy Angus bull sired by KBJ Windy that we bought from Minburn in 2007.  He had a phenomenal scan record and a beautiful momma.  He's never had a stitch of grain since he got to our place and has maintained flesh and become a stout, moderate framed sire of beautiful daughters and sons of the same thick and easy keeping type.  Due to the number of daughters we have retained, he is currently for sale.

Minburn Prosperity 4P
An Angus sire we bought from Minburn in 2005 after his mom had died pre-weaning.  We kind of snuck him out of the sale on a song.  He turned into a true breeding bull and is represented in a lot of  replacement females since 2006.  He was used heavily at our place and recently sold to Glen Smith where he is turning out more good commercial calves.
Soder Rancher 290W
A Soderglen Black Max (Maternal Angus Cross) bull with great type and curve-bender growth and carcass numbers.  Look for an offering of 3/4AN 1/4 SM heifers out of this bull.
BOJ Wave
We have been very pleased with the two red Simmental sires we purchased from Soderglen Farms, when the opportunity arose to purchase their sire we took advantage of it.  He is very well balanced and extremely structurally correct and at 5 years of age we look forward to several more years of use.  Look for him in our F1 heifer program.
Red Soder BOJ Wave 622U
One of two red polled Simmental sires we purchased from Soderglen Farms to use on our mature cows.  This bull should add growth and yield to calves while maintaining thickness and balance.  The first calves look great.
Red Soder BOJ Wave 606U
The second of two red polled Simmental sires we purchased from Soderglen Farms to use on our mature cows.  This bull should add growth and yield to calves while maintaining thickness and balance.  These sires have impressed us with their ability to travel and their agressiveness when it comes to breeding cows.  The first calves look great.
AI Sires
L T Bandwagon 3105
A Right Time son that provides the same type and balance as our walking sire.  Thick, easy fleshing with the right level of milk for running cows on grass.  We are expecting to see some really maternal females out of this sire.

BC Lookout 7024
We have used this Angus sire as our next step after Bando.  Thick, moderate frame, easy fleshing with growth, carcass and controlled milk.  We think his daughters will live on grass year round.  He also gets us into some Emblazon/Equator bloodlines that we have not tapped into with our cowherd.  The heifers have turned out well so far.

HTP SVF In Dew Time
We used this Simmental sire more heavily last year.  His numbers are a great match to our Angus sires when converted to an Angus base.  We believe that he will produce F1 females that are consistent with the type of cattle we raise.

L T 598 Bando 9074
We selected this Angus sire to use on our Alliance heifers and young females.  He is a good combination of calving ease, and above average growth in a moderate frame package.  We have been very impressed with the heifers that have been raised on nothing but forage.

Lazy S Red Shocker 226L
We were looking for a Simmental sire to use on our mature cows that increase growth and inject some hybrid vigour into the calves.  We think we have found it in Red Shocker.  He does a phenomenal job on feeder calves and has great carcass to boot.

Sitz Alliance 6595
We selected this Angus sire for use on the majority of our cowherd in 2004 due to his strong maternal characteristics, predictability, and his good feeding attributes.  We have many Alliance daughters in the herd and they have done well.
