| Our ranch
was started as a homestead in 1906. David Ganton arrived in the
Vermilion area in 1902-03 while working with the railway, but had to return
home to Ontario to deal with family matters. He returned to the area
in 1906 and filed his claim on NE14 Twp 48 5W4. As one of the first
settlers in the area, both the local church and the school district were
named in his honour. The ranch has since been passed down through the generations with generations 4 and 5 involved in active management and generation 6 just waiting to go. The ranch is situated near the junction of the Grizzly Bear Coullee (mentioned in Palliser's report) and the Battle River. The Battleford trail (the main highway between Battleford Saskatchewan and Fort Edmonton disects the pasture land south of the yard. Before settlement the area was home to several native tribes, primarily Blackfoot and Cree. |
